Eye Lift in Michigan: Is It For Me?

Eye lift (blepharoplasty) is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess tissues and rejuvenate the eye area. Some of the aesthetic concerns that can be improved through this procedure include excess skin on the upper or lower eyelids, prominent wrinkles and bags on the lower eyelids, and persistent puffiness. Blepharoplasty can also improve the appearance of droopy eyelids (the medical term for this condition is eyelid ptosis). In addition, you might be an eyelid lift candidate if people often comment that your eyes look tired even when you feel healthy and full of energy.

There is no “typical” age when people pursue eyelid surgery. This treatment can help people in their 30s who are genetically predisposed to develop wrinkles and folds in the eye area. On the other hand, it is also pursued by people in their 70s and 80s to correct droopy eyelids or remove excess skin from the upper or lower lids. If you feel self-conscious because of your eye appearance, schedule an appointment with a skilled Michigan blepharoplasty surgeon, such as Dr. Kotlus or Dr. Mok, and learn whether this treatment is for you.

Types of Eyelid Surgery

Dr. Mok and Dr. Kotlus offer several advanced forms of eyelid surgery. They use minimally invasive techniques that promote excellent results and dramatically reduce the recovery time. Depending on the needs of each Michigan eyelid lift patient, the various techniques can be combined to achieve the best possible aesthetic results.

Upper Eyelid Surgery: Upper blepharoplasty is designed to remove excess skin from the upper eyelids, as well as to lift the upper eyelids if they appear droopy. This procedure can also restore the upper eyelid crease which sometimes becomes less prominent as we age. During upper eyelid lift, Dr. Mok and Dr. Kotlus create small incisions within the natural creases of the lids. They use either a special scalpel, a laser, a radiofrequency device, or an electrocautery instrument for this purpose. Working through the incision, the surgeons rearrange the eyelid tissues and gently stretch the skin in a tighter, more youthful position. They pay particular attention to avoiding an unnatural, “pulled” look and instead consistently deliver natural-looking results. READ MORE

Lower Eyelid Surgery: Lower eyelids often develop unsightly bags consisting of misplaced fat deposits. During lower lid surgery, Dr. Mok and Dr. Kotlus can remove the redundant fatty tissue and tighten the loose lower eyelid skin to create a more youthful, refreshed appearance. READ MORE

Non-Surgical Lower Eyelid Lift: Sometimes, the appearance of lower eyelids can be improved through non-surgical techniques, such as facial fillers or fat transfers. As we age, the area below the eyes tends to “hollow out,” and often takes on a bluish tone due to blood vessels protruding through the delicate eyelid skin. This condition can be improved by restoring some of the lost fatty tissue through facial filler injections, or by augmenting the area with the patient’s own purified fat. In addition, laser skin resurfacing can be used to smooth minor lines and wrinkles, and Botox can be injected to soften prominent crow’s feet.

Laser Eyelid Surgery: Laser blepharoplasty is a variation of upper or lower lid surgery whereby a special laser is used to create the incisions and remove excess skin and fatty tissues. The laser immediately seals the blood vessels, thus reducing swelling and promoting faster recovery.

Oculofacial Plastic Surgery: Oculofacial plastics is a specialized form of surgery that focuses on aesthetic and reconstructive aspects of the face, eyelids, the brow, orbital bones, tear duct system, and nose. About 20 surgeons are trained each year in this field. These surgeons are meticulously trained in aesthetic and reconstructive facial surgery during their 2 year fellowships. READ MORE

After Your Eyelid Surgery in Michigan

Immediately after your surgery, you might notice some swelling and bruising in the eye area. In order to alleviate these symptoms, most Michigan blepharoplasty patients are instructed to apply cold compresses for the first 48 hours. The swelling and bruising will gradually disappear over the next seven days. During this time, you should avoid strenuous activities, contact sports, and bright sunlight.
